Vocal Point With Nick Workman

Nick Workman, best known as vocalist with Vega, expands on his singing career and what the future holds with regard to new music and live.

Who were your influences in the early days and have you always wanted to be a singer in a band?

"I have never made a secret of Joe Elliott’s influence on me. I also loved Ray Gillan and Jon Bon Jovi was also a big influence. I had no choice to be the singer when I started this journey. My mates got guitars and drums one Christmas so I had two choices: leave the room or shout loudly. Ha ha"

I saw you performing live a number of years ago in the band Kick supporting Hard Rain. You released a few albums which were enjoyable. I know of Eden, but are there other projects you’ve added your vocal talents to, apart from Vega?

"I did an album with the KICK lads called Zero Hour that didn’t come out until 2007. I actually wrote and recorded that with them before KICK. After I did that they asked me to front KICK and it got put on a dusty shelf."

Have you ever auditioned for the vocal spot in any other notable bands?

"No."

Some vocalists are on strict dietary regimes or gargle with special liquids. How have you kept your voice in tip-top shape all these years?

"Well, I don’t drink or smoke, I walk 4 miles a day, gym 3 times a week and I sold my soul to Ozzy."

Have you ever thought of releasing a solo album?

"Nah. I like being in a band with my mates. Never say never but it’s not anything I’m even thinking about."

Are there any musicians that you have not worked with, but would like to in the future?

"Like everyone in a band, there are loads of people I would love to work with.  Slash, Richie Sambora, Nuno Bettencourt….all my favourite guitarists haha."

Vega appears to be going from strength to strength, with each album bettering the previous one. Are you happy with what Vega have achieved so far?

"Yeah. We write the tunes we love and we are lucky that people continue to like it. We aren’t driven by critical praise, comments on forums or plays on YouTube. Our currency is how much fun we are having and how much fun people are having who buy our records and come to see us play live."

What are your plans with Vega with regards to new music and live gigs in 2022?

"Loads of touring and writing. We aren’t in a hurry to record an album again but we will be ready for when the time comes. But for now, 2022 and most of 2023 will be all about gigs and making up for lost time."
